Day 13
1 John 3:16-18
Scripture Reading(ESV)
16By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
17But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?
18Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
Today's Reflection
John grounds our understanding of love in Christ's ultimate sacrifice, then challenges us to love 'not in word or talk but in deed and in truth.' Real love moves beyond feelings and fine speeches into concrete actions that meet real needs. This passage asks a penetrating question: if we have material resources but close our hearts to those in need, how can God's love be living in us? This applies not just to physical needs but to emotional, relational, and spiritual needs as well. Sometimes love looks like bringing a meal, sometimes it's offering a listening ear, sometimes it's giving practical help or simply being present in difficulty. The key is that genuine love always costs us something—time, energy, resources, or comfort. But in this giving, we discover the joy of partnering with God's heart for others. As we near the end of our journey together, consider how God might be calling you to love more tangibly and practically in your relationships.
