Day 12

1 Thessalonians 5:11-15

Scripture Reading(ESV)

11Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

12We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,

13and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

14And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

15See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

Today's Reflection

Paul gives us a beautiful vision of Christian community marked by mutual encouragement and support. 'Encourage one another and build each other up' suggests that our words and actions should consistently add to others' lives rather than subtract from them. We become builders rather than demolishers in our relationships. The specific instructions that follow show practical love in action: respect spiritual leaders, live in peace, warn the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with everyone. This comprehensive approach recognizes that different people need different expressions of love. Some need challenge, others need comfort. Some need practical help, others need emotional support. The common thread is that we 'always seek to do good to one another.' This isn't about perfection but about intention—we deliberately choose actions and words that contribute to others' wellbeing and growth. When we make mistakes, we seek to restore rather than revenge.

Reflect

Who in your life most needs encouragement right now, and how specifically could you build them up?
